UPDATE: Water main breaks in downtown Canmore

“The break was likely caused by the rapid rise in the outdoor temperature in the previous days."

CANMORE  – A water main break in downtown Canmore has been fixed earlier than expected.

EPCOR spent until about mid-afternoon Tuesday (Dec. 27) finishing repairs on a water main break along 10th Street Canmore that was reported on Christmas Day around 9:45 p.m.

“The break was likely caused by the rapid rise in the outdoor temperature in the previous days,” according to an EPCOR statement.

“Crews are working safely and as quickly as possible to excavate and repair the line — hopefully by the end of the day Tuesday.”

Some businesses were impacted, including Communitea Cafe and Harvest, which were closed Dec. 27.

As the water main is repaired, all buildings on 10th St. between 6th Ave. and 7th Ave. will experience a reduction in water pressure.

“Water service itself was not greatly impacted by the break and we thank our dedicated on-call crews, who have been working hard to minimize the impact during this busy holiday period,” states EPCOR.

Temperature lows were in the negative 30 to 45 degree C range in the lead-up to Christmas, but rose quickly, with a forecast of a high of five degrees C in Canmore on Tuesday.
