Canmore Pride makes history

Raising the flag for Canmore’s first ever Pride Festival
Canmore Pride Flag

Today was the flag raising ceremony for Canmore’s first ever Pride Festival, which kicks off today and lasts until Sept. 19.

Along with supporters from the community, present at the ceremony were Sarah Perritt, co-chair of the Canmore Pride Society, Ron Ulrich, co-chair of the Canmore Pride Society and Canmore Mayor John Borrowman.

The raising was a symbol of solidarity. Raised to half-mast – an observance of the ongoing residential school recoveries – the Canmore Pride flag joins the flags of Canada and Alberta.

The Mayor’s official statement stated “On behalf of the Town of Canmore, I would like to wish the Canmore Pride Society the best in their inaugural Pride Festival Sept. 16-19, 2021. Many people in Canmore identify as members of the LGBTQ+ community. We raise the Pride flag each May 17 – the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia – to signal that our municipal buildings are safe spaces for everyone and to demonstrate our acceptance and celebration of the LGBTQ community during Pride month.

"Celebrating Pride is about visibility and creating a sense of belonging for people who may not have it. It’s about celebrating our community's richness, diversity and inclusion. As a community, we have come a long way in recognizing and celebrating people from all walks of life who call Canmore home. I’m happy to see this Pride Festival being created to celebrate pride this year.”

Over the next four days, the festival will feature “a number of free activities and events designed to establish visibility, inclusiveness, and education of Canmore’s LGBTQ2S+ community.”

Some of these events include a Queer orientated yoga, mindfulness and meditation at Centennial Park hosted by Kayla from Positive Healing, along with Bow Valley resident Jessia Arsenio at 11 a.m. on Sept. 18th and a Two Spirit Performance on Saturday Sept. 18 at the Centennial Park at noon.
