KANANASKIS COUNTRY – Annual road closures in Kananaskis Country take effect today, Friday (Dec. 1).

The Highwood Pass, a section of Highway 40 from the winter gate at King Creek Ridge trailhead to the Highwood House Junction, will reopen to vehicles June 14.

Highway 66, west of Elbow Falls and the Powderface Trail; Highway 546, west of Sandy McNabb Campground; Powderface Road and Moose Mountain Road, are also closed until May 14 due to heavy snowfall events in winter, making travel difficult and dangerous, and also to better allow for the migration of wildlife.

Also closed for the winter season until April 30 are Highway 940, better known as the Forestry Trunk Road, from south of Cataract Creek and northwest of Plateau Mountain Road; Highway 532, between Highway 22 and the Forestry Trunk Road; and McLean Creek Road, south of the McLean staging access road, north of Fisher Creek.

Bow Valley Park Road, west of Middle Lake, was closed mid-October and will also reopen April 30.

While it's closed to vehicles and free of snow, Highwood Pass is a popular cycling area. Hiking opportunities in the area are also available, but winter closures are recognized at the King Creek Ridge trail head day-use area and parking lot.
