BANFF NATIONAL PARK – A 20-kilometre stretch of Highway 93 north – better known as the Icefields Parkway – is expected to experience closures on Monday (Jan. 29) for avalanche control work.
The closures will be from Parker Ridge to Pinto Lake trailhead in Banff National Park, about 20 kilometres south of Parker Ridge. Travellers should expect intermittent one-hour closures between 12-5 p.m.
"Warmer temperatures over the next several days in Jasper and Banff national parks will increase the avalanche hazard," stated a Facebook post from Jasper National Park. "For public safety, it is anticipated that a 20 km section of the Icefields Parkway will be closed Monday, January 29, 2024, for avalanche control work. This will reduce the likelihood of a natural avalanche that could put the safety of travellers at risk."
Parks Canada said the remaining part of the 230 km highway will remain open during the avalanche control.
