Greyhound bus service ended in Western Canada on Wednesday (Oct. 31), but smaller companies like the Banff Express are hoping to fill the void.

CANMORE - Greyhound Canada will no longer operate bus services across Western Canada leaving passengers to find alternative transportation options across British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

The company said it could no longer operate unsustainable routes citing a 41 per cent drop in ridership across Canada since 2010. Bus service will officially end on Oct. 31.

The company blamed the drop in ridership on an increasingly challenging transportation environment from national and inter-regional transportation services, the entry of ultra-low-cost airlines, regulatory constraints and increased car travel.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce these service impacts for the end of October. We understand that these route changes are difficult for our customers," said Stuart Kendrick, senior vice president for the company.

“We are committed to keeping customers informed and will continue to provide fair and open communications to ensure that adequate notice is given.”

In British Columbia, the Vancouver to Seattle route will continue, which is operated by Greyhound Lines, Inc. (USA) and BoltBus service.

Bus service will also continue in Ontario and Quebec, however in northern Ontario, service will be discontinued along the Trans-Canada west of Sudbury.
