FIELD, B.C. – A female ice climber believed to be in her 30s has died from her injuries after being hit by an avalanche in Yoho National Park on Monday afternoon (March 11).

Parks Canada said an avalanche struck her guided party around 2 p.m. while she was ice climbing on a popular route on Mt. Stephen known as Massey’s, located east of Field, B.C.

According to Parks, STARS Air Ambulance transferred her to Calgary in critical, life-threatening condition, however she passed away the following day.

“Parks Canada extends our deepest condolences to her friends and family,” wrote Amy Krause, a communications officer with Parks Canada.

The avalanche rating for the day was moderate in the alpine, low at treeline and low below treeline.

The federal agency said a few recent slides have run further than expected in recent days and warned the public that with moderate precipitation, new snow and strong winds in the forecast the avalanche risk is expected to rise.
