COCHRANE – The youth suspect accused of attempted murder for shooting a German tourist in August has been granted bail.

The decision was delivered by Justice Peter Barley Thursday (Nov. 1) in Calgary Provincial Court.

The young suspect cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act and there is a publication ban on the details of the bail hearing.

The bail was set at $2,500 and conditional on him staying with a responsible guardian, he must stay at the house except to attend hockey – while supervised and maintaining good behavior – or attend school, must report to a bail supervisor and must maintain a landline and answer it.

Additionally, his passport has been revoked and he must also refrain from using drugs and alcohol and cannot possess a firearm.

Following the judgment Barley told the teen, “This is the most important chance you will get in your life.”

The boy’s confirmed legal counsel is Balfour Der. The boy has been in custody since he was arrested on Aug. 24.

The teen, who turns 17 years old this month, faces 14 charges including attempted murder, discharging a firearm with intent and possession of a prohibited weapon.

The victim, Horst Stewin, a German tourist who was visiting Canada, was shot in the head Aug. 2 while driving on Highway 1A near Morley. He has since returned to Germany where the bullet was removed from his brain. The bullet has been sent to Canadian authorities for ballistics testing.

The other three occupants of the vehicle, Stewin’s family members, had no serious injuries.

The case is expected to return to the Cochrane Courts. A trial date has not yet been set.
