CANMORE-KANANASKIS – A heavy rainfall warning is in effect for the Kananaskis-Canmore area due to a low pressure system moving over central Alberta.

Environment Canada issued the rainfall warning at 11:55 a.m. Thursday (June 20), indicating the low pressure system would be "a long episode of rain, at times heavy."

Also in effect, the provincial government's Alberta River Basins' website issued an alert for a high stream flow in the Bow River Basin at 11:59 a.m. Thursday.

"A high streamflow advisory remains in effect for the mainstream of the Bow River upstream of and including the City of Calgary," the advisory reads.

"High stream flow advisories remain in effect for the tributaries of the Bow River upstream of Banff. Water levels rise up to 0.5 metres are currently expected on the mainstem of the Bow."

Alberta River Basin said though the expected water level rises appear low, the Bow is currently "slightly above average and low lying pathways may be affected."

The Kananaskis-Canmore region could get from 50 to 80 mm of rain throughout the day with the heaviest precipitation expected to move south along the mountain parks regions and foothills, according to Environment Canada.

"Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads," Environment Canada said in its weather alert.

"Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Be prepared for possible winter conditions at higher elevations."
