RUSSIA – Canada's ski cross team is trying to leave Russia amid the European country's bloody military invasion of Ukraine this week.
Alpine Canada Alpin is working toward securing flights out of the Sunny Valley, Russia, region, where 12 of its athletes were supposed to compete this weekend, including multiple world cup gold medallist Kris Mahler of Canmore.
"We are working to secure flights out of the region as soon as possible," a statement from Alpine Canada Alpin said. "We are working directly with the ministers of Global Affairs and Sport who are aware and providing support as needed."
The Sunny Valley roster of athletes included Mahler, Reece Howden, Kevin Drury, Brady Leman, Jared Schmidt, Christopher Delbosco, Zoe Chore, Tiana Garins, Hannah Schmidt, Courtney Hoffos, Marielle Thompson, and Brittany Phelan. Alpine Canada Alpin did not say how many more personnel are with the team.
Tens of thousands have fled their homes in Ukraine on Thursday (Feb. 24) following terror, carnage and death caused by the Russian military launching a full-scale attack on the eastern border of its neighbouring country.
Members of the United Nations condemned Russia's actions and have called it "an unjustifiable blow to peace".
Following the attack, Alberta announced it would send $1 million in humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
