BANFF – The girls of Banff Bears rugby are 3-0 to start the season after a dominant 43-15 victory over the Strathmore Spartans on Monday (May 13) in Banff.
Cassidy Born lead the Bears' offence with three tries, Krista Scurfield scored twice, and with one try each were Skylar Belczyk and Hannah Bowman.
Grace Pigott made good on four conversions.
For the undefeated high school team, the goal for this season is clear.
“Winning,” said Scurfield, a Grade 10 back. “We have the potential to win and if our heads are there then we can get there.
“Our team is really collective and we all get along really well so that really helps with everything on the field."
In a game where the Bears never trailed, the local girls' offensive prowess was too much to handle for the step-too-slow Spartans at Banff rec grounds, as they held a 23-10 lead going into halftime.
In the second half, the Bears offence continued to be strong and pushed the game's tempo as the Spartans quickly fizzled out.
“We had some good runs in the second half and we just destroyed them,” said Lily Capel, who plays lock.
Up next, the Bears put their undefeated record on the line this Wednesday (May 15) in Banff at 5 p.m., when they take on against Croxford Cavaliers.
The boys rugby team plays immediately after against the Cavaliers boys team.
