Third time’s the charm for duo at Canmore Mixed Open

“A lot was on the line with that putt,” said Canmore's Shamir Patel, one half of the 2019 Mixed Open champs.

CANMORE – Canmore golfer Shamir Patel and Calgary’s Kaitlin Troop won first prize at the Canmore Mixed Open on Sunday after things came down to a do or die playoff.

Following two days (July 20-21) and 36 holes at the Canmore Golf & Curling Club course, a playoff was called to determine the winner when Patel and Troop were tied with Calgary’s Dustin Yeager and Morgan Bell at one under par. However, only one hole was needed to determine the champs.

In the final moments, Patel nailed a five-foot putt to maintain par on the hole, putting pressure on Bell to sink an eight-footer to keep the playoff alive. Her putt came up short though, giving Patel and Troop their first championship at the mixed open after three attempts and two runner-up finishes.

Patel said it was nerve-wrecking for things to come down to the final shot.

“A lot was on the line with that putt,” Patel said. “Kaitlin and I are good friends and we’ve played twice before [in the Canmore Mixed Open]  … [today] was very close, but we managed to hold out.”
