BANFF – The Wolves made dog meat of the Bisons.

The Wolves 9.8 (62) defeated their rivals 3.2 (20) to capture the fifth annual Bow Valley Australian Football League 10’s Championship on Saturday (May 25) at Banff Rec Grounds.

“It was more competitive than I thought it would be, which is a good thing because everyone got really into it,” said Alexander Bradley of the Wolves. “But generally, it’s just fun to come out and play a game of footy.”

The sport, which is part handballing, part soccer, part American football and part rugby is scored by kicking the ball like a field goal through the sticks.

On Saturday, it was a wet and mucky on the Banff gridiron, but the players still loved the slippery game play.

“It was kind of nice because there was no wind,” said Jono Ashton of the Bisons. “In footy, wind is probably the worst so (having) a bit of rain is a bit slippery and there’s more tackles and really we’re all quite amateur anyway so it’s nice to have the ball on the ground and make some tackles.”
