Back to Basics: Simple, House-made Food on the Menu at Harvest Cafe

It’s one of those places you know is going to be good as soon as you walk in the door. Lively chatter floats across a homey dining room adorned with local art and hand-made goods. The aroma of fresh coffee gets the appetite going as the glass case promises sweet and savoury treats for breakfast and lunch. This is Canmore’s Harvest Cafe, a local eatery with a passion for simple, delicious food, made in-house and accessible to all sorts of eaters.

Gluten-free soups, sauces, wraps and baked goods open up a world of deliciousness for those with intolerances, while vegans and vegetarians have a wide variety of options from breakfast wraps to grilled panini. Owner and longtime Bow-Valley resident Michelle, says it’s important to her that her customers know exactly what’s in their food.

Sustainability is another theme as Harvest was an early adopter of the Canmore Commercial Food Waste program and almost everything in the cafe is compostable. WIth programs to encourage bringing your own coffee cups and other initiatives, Harvest does everything it can to minimize its ecological footprint.

Local is the name of the game here with Jolene’s Tea. Canmore Brewing and Wildlife Distillery on the drinks menu together with Canmore’s Mountain Blend Roasters coffee.

We were in for breakfast and had a heck of time choosing from an extensive soup, sandwich and wrap menu. We opted for the Hogwarts wrap featuring a smoky chipotle pulled pork, a zippy chorizo with potato-and-mozza scrambled eggs wrapped in a crispy grilled wrap and served with a tangy tomato jam that added a perfect brightness to balance the rich, meaty wrap.

Never ones to shy away from dessert for breakfast, we took Michelle’s invitation to try the carrot cake and were not disappointed. This simple, no-fuss cake is perfect for this time of year with a modest spread of delicious cream-cheese icing on a moist, sweet and aromatic cake. Also recommended is the popular Hangover wrap and Mexican inspired Holy Mole wrap with house-made mole sauce. If you’re in for lunch try the Curry Chicken or Pink Goat wrap; if you eat plants only, the veggie rumble comes highly recommended.

Visit Harvest Cafe Sunday - Thursday 8:30 - 4:00 and Friday and Saturday 8:30 - 4;30.
