CANMORE – The St. John's-based folk band Rube and Rake are making the journey from the east coast to Canmore for its western Canada tour.

Josh Sandu and Andrew Laite will be under the lights at Eclipse Coffee Roasters on Railway Ave in Canmore on April 1. Doors open at 6 p.m. and music will begin at 7 p.m.

“I think we might stand out a bit compared to most due to we perform on one microphone,” said Sandu. “So, nothing is plugged in, and it gives a sound that I think is a lot more flattering to the style of music we played.”

On stage, they’ll be giving a sneak peek of their new album, which is in the midst of being mastered for streaming.

“For the most part, our songs are created around two instruments without the need for adding additional instrumentation, although on this record, we may have put a bit more ornamentation on it,” said Sandu.

Sandu said he believes the banter and the stories he and Laite tell on stage are what separates them from the rest.

“I feel like the live version of us, in my opinion, is the best version of us,” said Sandu.

“I don't feel like we've ever really captured ourselves as much as I would like to on a record and I feel like a component of that is the storytelling, the back and forth between me and Andrew.”

They will be kicking off their 16-stop tour in the farmlands of Saskatchewan and making it as far as Sandu’s hometown, Prince George, B.C.

In 2022, Sandu and Laite won songwriter of the year by the East Coast Music Association, and in 2020 they were awarded folk/roots artist of the year by MusicNL.

They have two albums and three singles to their name. On thier sophomore record Leaving with Nothing, the song, What Will, pulled in more than 169,000 plays on Spotify.
