BREWSTER, John Joseph
March 12, 1933 – July 28, 2023
On Friday, July 28th, 2023, our dad, John Joseph Brewster (aka Papa Joe) passed away peacefully in Kelowna after a brief illness. Predeceased by his beloved wife Elsie. Left to mourn are his four children Joe (Cheryl), Shannon (Greg), Don (Mary), and Karyn (Cray); his grandchildren Zack (Carrie), Patrick (Kelley), Mackenzie (Jasmine), Lexi (Cameron), Sydney (Trevor); and his great-grandbabies Hallie, Lane, Aria, Brea, Kyla, and Evelyn. Joe was born in Banff, Alberta on March 12, 1933, to Barbara and George Brewster. He enjoyed a lively and adventurous childhood in the Rockies with his siblings; Jim, Evelyn, and Sheilagh. Joe worked at Brewster Transport Company during the time when Banff was still considered a small town, with only two distinct seasons, a few shops and hotels open in the winter, and when life was much slower. Along with trying to keep four children in line, Joe found time to enjoy and share the great outdoors; from family horse pack trips (Mount Assiniboine) to playing and coaching hockey and golf. Joe belonged to the Banff Kinsmen Club and served as President of the Bow Valley Minor Hockey League. He supported many community endeavors and was a part of the 1972 Winter Olympic bid for Banff. Retirement was spent in the sunny Okanagan golfing at Kelowna Golf and Country Club, enjoying life with family, and making lifelong friends. Papa Joe adored his growing family and loved each one dearly. He loved Kelowna and believed in supporting the local community. Thank you to all who supported Papa Joe and our family over the last month. The family would like to extend a warm thank you to Dr. Hendriks, Guisachan Family Medical, along with the incredible staff at Hawthorn Park and Manor who provided exceptional care. To honor our Dad’s request there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Diabetes Canada, www.diabetes.ca, the Kidney Foundation of Canada, www.kidney.ca, or any local charity. Condolences, photos, or memories may be sent to the family by visiting www.springfieldfuneralhome.com
