Robert “Bob” was an unselfish, kind man who left a positive impact on everyone who crossed paths with him. His infectious smile, countless zingers, and quick wit captured the hearts of many. Bob passed away at the age of 76 on August 3rd, 2023 surrounded by the love of his wife and daughters in Calgary, Alberta.

Bob will be missed dearly by his wife Beverly, sister Kathleen Knight (John) and children Scott (Sara), Stacey (Andrew), Bonnie, Courtney (Mike), Katelyn (Logan), Jodie (Brandon) and his many grandchildren. Bob is predeceased by his father, Melville, mother, Hazel, and brother, Doug (Gail).

Bob attended the University of Waterloo, achieving a dual degree in Mathematics and Physical Education. He was a naturally gifted student and born team captain of the University hockey team.

Bob, or “Mud”, as he was called on the ice, went on to play for Team Canada. He was picked up by the Montreal Canadiens, starting his 22-year NHL career that would include two Stanley Cup wins. He also played with the Montreal Canadiens, Los Angeles Kings, Atlanta Flames, and Calgary Flames and coached for the Calgary Flames, Chicago Blackhawks, Winnipeg Jets and San Jose Sharks. He received the Jack Adams Coach of the Year award for his accomplishments with the Winnipeg Jets. He coached internationally in Germany, at the Olympics and led team Canada to a gold medal victory at the World Championships.

Bob spent the summers on Lake of the Woods in Kenora, Ontario. You would often find him in his Tilley hat fishing with buddies (fueled by red licorice and jujubes), planting trees or at progressive dinner parties with the dear group of friends he had cultivated over his 30 years at the lake.In the winter, Bob lived in Canmore, Alberta where he enjoyed daily walks hand-in-hand with the love of his life, Beverly. He loved playing old timers’ hockey in Calgary and finding the perfect colour of ski wax for the best cross country glide in the mountains.

Bob fought a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia at the end of his life. This time was made easier by the support of his community. His family extends their deepest gratitude to the Lake crew, his hockey buddies, Jerry Jormakka with the NHL Alumni Association, Dr John Michalyshyn, all the staff at Bethany Riverview, and many others who supported him during this time.

Bob was a devoted father and husband, beloved teammate and mentor who will be deeply missed by his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Bob for research for Dementia and Cognitive Disorder at the Hotchkiss Brain institute, Concussion Legacy Foundation Canada or Bethany Care Foundation.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, August 27th, 2023 from 1:00pm to 4:00 pm at Earl Grey Golf Course (6540 20 St SW, Calgary, AB T3E 5L2).
