Bear 148 – wrong focus

Editor: Rather than darting bear 148, boxing her up, relocating her and putting her life at risk, why not switch the focus more acutely to those who created this dire situation to begin with? Maybe we should consider darting those who ignore the bear

Maybe we should consider darting those who ignore the bear warning signs, box them up and relocate them to a new location, maybe a city centre somewhere. Any city centre will do.

The feeding season for our bears is short. Surely we can set aside our own selfish needs for a few weeks regardless of whether or not there are bear warning signs posted and give bears some of their space back so they can stock up for winter.

This lack of caring and respect is very concerning. The intensity of it seems to be growing as it permeates through Canmore. We see cars, trucks and motorhomes parking on the wrong side of our main streets, U-turns in the middle of busy traffic, debris left in our parks and we see precious green space being turned into bike parks.

This is all magnified by what appears to be little or no enforcement of our laws and bylaws.

Add all these behaviours together and it does not paint a pretty picture of our community. It implies that it is OK to run roughshod over everything we stand for and value.

To those of you who take the time to point out bear warnings to offenders, to those of you who actually pick up other person’s debris and to those of you who help others adhere to our laws and by laws … Thank you.
