Bridge over the river … why?

Most people don’t think too often of the sewer system here as it flowed quietly under the Bow River for the past 100 years propelled by simple gravity. This system was reliable, cost efficient, safe.

The new system involves pumping the sewage up and over the river, slinging the pipes under the new bridge structure, requiring motors, electricity, generators, very complex and costly. The big problem is – this new system is not working.

Every week since it was connected in July, a huge pump truck arrives to pump out the sewage the system can’t handle. It is not being pumped up and over the river as we were told it would. This is involving a lot of manpower and of course very expensive.

A request to the town on the cost for this regular pumping out has not been answered. It’s great to cross the river and not worry about vehicle traffic, etc., but at what cost if Banff’s new sewer system is not working properly?
