Last Monday, more than 60 citizens and I packed the council chambers in opposition to dormitory-style buildings for seasonal workers on Beaver Street, or any other residential street in Banff; only to have the mayor say that this isn’t a matter for the council, it belongs in the planning department, as though what was at issue was a new roof.

Granted, there is a formal process, but the views of our elected officials are important. Since when do politicians not take a position? It’s their job. It is what they were elected to do.

The town has heard from Caribou Properties and now it has heard from the community. They have all the information they need.

This is a case of yes or no. There is no in between. Either they say I am for dormitory-style housing for transient workers in residential neighbourhoods,’ or they say I am against it and instead favour a campus-like setting for these types of complexes.

To say nothing is not an option. It is an offense to the citizens who elected them. The mayor and each council member should soon declare where they stand. Responsible leaders do it every day.

The community, the planning department and Caribou Properties all have a right to know.
