I would like to write to say how much we enjoy and recommend Gerry Stephenson’s mine tour presented by the Canmore Museum and Geoscience Centre.

I’ve brought friends from overseas, other parts of Canada and even from Canmore to the tour and enjoyed it with them each time. His delightful and thoughtful stories range from how miners worked closely as a team in 22-inch high coal seams four miles under the Irish Sea to how to revive a gas-testing canary. You might even learn what to do if you meet a hyena in a coalmine.

There are four tours to field sites in the valley where we learned about how and why Canmore was mined and about his reclamation project that has given us Quarry Lake.

We also came to understand more about the current ramifications. Did you know that there are approximately 3,700 miles of tunnels and shafts underground here?

As he said, “This town’s history, when you go back, is absolutely fascinating.”

T. Beijer,
