Re: The killing fields of Southern Alberta - Dec. 31, 2014

Having heard on the radio about the future release of buffalo into Banff National Park I was really pleased and optimistic.

However; the optimism lessened when I thought about the “killing fields” on the military base at Suffield in Southern Alberta.

Some years back, elk were introduced back to the prairies and proved to be a great success. Now they have become a nuisance to some people because they eat grass and are therefore going to be hunted until their numbers are more tolerable to the special people.

Nobody wants to admit what the carrying capacity for the 1,000 square mile military base is. It seems that killing as many as possible is a viable solution. The sustainable numbers will be figured out once the elk are culled by the thousands.

These people are determined to kill/cull thousands and the hunt in February 2015 is just the beginning of the end. This hunt is to kill 500 cow elk heavy with calf. If it’s not bad enough killing the mother, there unborn calves will litter the prairies feeding the coyotes.

I wish the buffalo introduction at Banff all the best and that the “killing fields” of southern Alberta don’t become their legacy.
