Honour our democracy

For me, Remembrance Day is about honouring and thanking all those who perished and put their lives at risk, allowing us to enjoy freedom.

Last month’s acts of violence in Ottawa, inspired by ISIS extremists, are a profound reminder of how important it is that we live in a democracy.

It is our great fortune to live in a democratic country where we are free. Free to pursue our individual, family and community goals. Free to express our opinions. Free to practice our religion and spirituality of choice. Free to have our personal privacy.

We can never take for granted these freedoms: all of us carry a responsibility to protect and enhance our democracy through active participation.

Since 1900, over 116,000 Canadian military persons died in wars to protect our democracy. To genuinely honour all past and presently serving Canadian military members we have an obligation to actively practice and improve our democracy.

In less than a year a federal election will be held. Between now and then, please get engaged in our democracy by writing letters to the paper, attending local events, or volunteering for a candidate.

Lest We Forget.

Marlo Raynolds,

Federal Liberal candidate for Banff-Airdrie
