Did anybody hear food critic, John Gilchrist’s CBC Radio morning review of a new Canmore restaurant on Aug. 8? He was very complimentary about the food, but declined to rate the restaurant from 1 to 10 (a first for him) because as he explained to his listeners, Canmore has a housing crisis related to the rental market, making it difficult for small businesses to hold on to people.

Apparently since opening, this restaurant has lost several chefs because there is nothing reasonable to rent. In other words, he couldn’t guarantee that standards would be maintained.

What Gilchrist probably doesn’t know is that secondary suites are forbidden in Canmore which allows for a conveniently tight market and sky-high rents elsewhere. Is any of this related to NIMBYism?
