How about affordable taxes?

It sounds so innocuous ... the 4.28 per cent increase in our property taxes will only add an additional $8 per month to the average Banff homeowner’s tax bill.

I guess that with my small (two bedroom/two bath) single story bungalow, I am not the average Banff homeowner, as this tax increase will add three times that to my tax bill. It will push my tax bill to about $532 a month (an astronomical $6,400 a year).

If property taxes continue to increase at this rate, in 10 years’ time my tax bill will be pushing $10,000 a year. Who can afford that?

My salary has never kept pace with the annual ToB tax increases. The ToB has simply got to stop spending so much money. I think that Town Hall renovations (yet again), district heating systems, woonerfs and greenways should all be put on the back burner for now.

We talk a lot about affordable housing in Banff. Maybe its time to start talking about affordable taxes too.
