Letter: Basic economic theory could apply to pollution

Editor: In his letter to the Outlook of Oct.

In his letter to the Outlook of Oct. 3, Tom Duke refers to the basic equation that has many applications in economics and other fields: Total number of things = number of people (population) multipled by the number of things per person

This is the basis for Thomas Malthus' theory of 1798 in which population growth would overwhelm food supply.

This theory has fallen out of favour, but, if we substitute food supply with pollution, Mr. Malthus could be correct after all.
