LETTER: Gondola will likely impact wildlife, community

Wow, Stone Creek Resorts has voluntarily committed to conducting an environmental assessment (EA) for a gondola project proposed for an area that should never even be on the table.

Why is it that rich companies and their shareholders never seem to have enough? How can such a plan even be proposed if we lack the necessary data that shows us where the stress thresholds for the various wildlife species are?

This proposed large scale project, if allowed, will disrupt wildlife movement, further alienate bears and butterflies from good habitats, create more conflict potential between humans and wildlife and add more people to roads and trails in the area for which the thresholds for many locals – two- and four-legged – have already long been reached.

I ask the Town of Canmore, its councillors, the province, Stone Creek Properties and all other businesses with a similar growth mentality in the Bow Valley: how do impacts compare to a bit more money of which we all already have more than enough? Why do you continue to consciously sacrifice what nurtures us? Like death by a thousand cuts, this project will simply add to the demise of the natural beauty of our beloved home.
