Letter: Increase to Canmore's municipal property taxes unwarranted

Most local family budgets don't have the ability to support run-away spending at the rate approved by this council.

Editor:

Canmore town council's decision to reopen the 2020 budget and approve an increase in municipal property taxes of 4.8 per cent (up from the previously approved increase of 4.6 per cent) is a slap in the face to homeowners and families at a time when average salaries in Canada are expected to increase 2.6 per cent in 2019 and the country's annual inflation rate stands at 2 per cent.

Having taken the opportunity to re-examine the budget, council should have been looking for ways to reduce costs, not further increase them. We need a mayor and council that is more in touch with fiscal realities.

Most local family budgets don't have the ability to support run-away spending at the rate approved by this council.

Tom Kiley,

Canmore
