In regards to “Banff Budget Talks Get Testy” in the Dec. 15 edition of the Outlook.

Thanks very much to Couns. Ted Christensen and Hugh Pettigrew for bringing to Banff council a proposal to cap – for 2023 – the municipal tax increase at 5.4 per cent.

They requested feedback from fellow councillors at the Dec. 12 service review meeting. As a resident of Banff who will deliver my tax payment to the Town in 2023, the proposal is of interest to me. The present proposed increase of 10.48 per cent does deserve robust debate.

Christensen fielded a number of comments and questions from the mayor and fellow councillors. From a reading of the Outlook story, I believe that Christensen understands very well the code of conduct for elected officials (Town of Banff Bylaw 429-1). As a veteran council member, Christensen has chosen to embrace the provisions of Article 9.0 of the bylaw dealing with respectful interactions. In bringing his concerns, Christensen stated he was “looking for more guidance” and “I don't want to be offensive.”

This report also speaks to the qualities voters wish to see in their elected representatives. Christensen has, from the story, been speaking with Banff residents and voters: he is listening to their concerns regarding the likelihood of a significant tax increase in the face of economic uncertainty. He is, with the support of Pettigrew, bringing these concerns to council.

Ted and Hugh, I appreciate your efforts on behalf of Banff residents.

Jim Karras,

Banff, Alberta
