LETTER: Town council needs to do more to address their Climate Action Plan

Editor: It has become increasingly apparent that the Town of Canmore is failing to follow through on the Climate Action Plan (CAP) which was passed unanimously by Town Council over two years ago.

Editor:

As board members with Bow Valley Climate Action (BVCA), it has become apparent the Town of Canmore is failing to follow through on the Climate Action Plan (CAP) that was passed unanimously by town council in 2018. The CAP made it clear the Town needed to work on amendments to plans and policies to help with necessary reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

The BVCA has made repeated requests to begin a review of the land use bylaw to encourage greater energy efficiency in buildings, but no review has been initiated. We believe the Town has also failed to update its policy on environmental impact statements and its policy on sustainability screening reports to require any future ones address climate change mitigation.

By delaying in updating the bylaws and policies will mean development proposals can continue to be brought forward in a way that does not reflect the community concerns on climate change and council's previous declaration of a climate emergency.
