Loss of obstetrics a loss for Banff

Consolidating medical services makes good sense with two exceptions, the care of expectant families and with our elderly loved ones.

As someone that has been doing birth work for a long time in the Bow Valley, I have witnessed first-hand the quality of care and level of expertise that has been a standard of care at BMSH. It is one of the best environments to welcome new life into, created by an outstanding group of professionals. I base my judgment on having witnessed birth in many environments and institutions.

As to the issue of safety which has been claimed as the impetus for this decision, I am in complete disagreement with this reasoning. By centralizing care and increasing numbers there will be more pressure on the system to get mothers and babies in and out faster. This has the potential to jeopardize the natural process, which does not happen on a schedule. It needs time and mothers need a relaxed environment to feel safe.

Families are the ones that stand to lose the most when women’s choices regarding when and where they give birth are limited. It has been proven that when labouring women are supported in their community, in an environment where they feel safe, the outcomes are greatly improved for mothers and babies. This has far reaching effects.

The continuity of care that Dr. Fowke provides is the gold standard. She will not have the ability to deliver the same level of care outside of Banff. The nurses are among the best that I have ever worked with.

I implore the greater community, please express your views and let your voice be heard for I fear that if this change is allowed to proceed there will be no going back.
