Lucky to live in Banff

Last week’s uproar over paid parking in Banff provided an unflattering contrast and insight into how our world is working.

When many in Banff were fussing and losing their tempers over the parking debate, we also learned from afar that many hundreds are literally running for their lives, some unsuccessfully, in places such as Gaza, Syria, Nigeria, Sudan and elsewhere, while thousands more, including families with young children, are huddled into overcrowded refugee camps with no prospects of a safe future.

Meanwhile, back in the comfort and security of Banff, we showed our outrage over the prospect of paying $2 an hour to park our vehicles downtown while we shopped or swung by Starbucks for an afternoon latte.

Really? Really? Oh, the folly and blindness of the pampered and privileged and that’s us folks. How about a periodic reality check?
