NIMBY, with reason

Regarding the Oct. 10 letter “NIMBY shows in Peaks protest.”

Mr. Carlson’s letter accuses those opposing the proposed development of Urban Reserve lands in the Peaks of Grassi area of “hard-core NIMBYism” – a hurtful statement directed at individuals sincerely concerned about the future of a corner of our town.

That said, our opposition is about “backyards” in a sense.

The 2012 BCEAG Wildlife Corridor and Habitat Patch Guidelines for the Bow Valley show that the proposed development area is in the “backyard” of the Quarry Lake Local Habitat Patch.

The 2010 Private Land Conservation Opportunities in Alberta’s Bow Valley assigned the proposed development land as having a very high priority for conservation given that it is located at a pinchpoint at the west end of Three Sisters primary wildlife corridor.

We feel that the Peaks Urban Reserves lands are part of Canmore’s “backyard” and that they should be left undeveloped. We hope that council will agree.

Glynis Carling,

Canmore
