It is interesting to observe that now that Parks Canada has a CEO and all its executives operating under strategic business plans with bonuses tied to economic performance, it now has ever closer ties to “partner” tourism operators and lobby groups; an increasing appetite for almost annual hikes in fees for unimproved services; and is bandying about proposals for bizarre new profit-generating activities like zip lines, via ferrata and glass-decks over canyon lips that have been rejected as inappropriate by other national park systems and World Heritage Sites around the world.

Perhaps it is time we recognized that Parks Canada is beginning to look a lot like the kind of organization that national parks were created to protect us from.
