In response to a letter from an irate Canmorite in last week’s paper in regards to the trial of a payment system for use at the local tennis courts, I thought some clarification might be beneficial.

It is standard practice in Canmore, as in probably most other municipalities, that there is a payment system for the convenience of pre-booking public facilities such as baseball diamonds, soccer fields and hockey rinks. These booking systems allow organized sports teams to set schedules and enjoy the sports of their choice with the certainty that when they arrive at the facility, their chosen sport can be played and the venue vacant and ready for them.

What is most important to keep in mind as far as the tennis courts in Canmore are concerned is that all of the courts are free and open to anyone on a first come, first served basis from first thing in the morning until 3 p.m., Monday to Friday and on weekends from early morning until noon, so these non-prime hours cannot be booked.

Anyone can book a tennis court during the primetime hours, you do not have to be a club member, so if a member of the general public wanted to guarantee themselves having a tennis court for a specific time during the primetime hours, they could go to either www.canmoretennis.ca or to the Town of Canmore tennis page at www.canmore.ca and reserve their court for $7.50 per hour which is very reasonable when split between four people playing doubles. Tennis is a sport for the young and the old and a reservation system will allow all of us to plan ahead.
