Public hearing will be important

Canmore’s public hearing on March 10 at 6 p.m. should be of interest to citizens. Stiff increases are proposed for food and beverage operators in order to fund promoting the town through its contracted agency.

Stiff increases are proposed for food and beverage operators in order to fund promoting the town through its contracted agency. The formula collects money for seats that either do not exist, or are empty 95 per cent of the time.

My suggestion is that a moratorium on any increases to this sector is more appropriate.

We’ve had many great meals in Canmore restaurants on nights when there was maybe just one or two other tables, and admired the dignity and grit of the operators putting out those beautiful plates on a night they were clearly not making dime one.

We’ve travelled and told others of our town where there are 50 good places to eat and not one bad one.

We’ve sure seen how the food service industry was the first job our kids had, the first place they put what they learned at home into practice.

My friend tells me the way he promotes his shop is he puts the sandwich in front of the customer who takes his phone and sends a picture of it to his friends. What a world.

Bureaucracies meeting with bureaucracies to plan conferences with other bureaucracies have probably always been irrelevant, but they are certainly past their time now. Everyone knows where Canmore is – we don’t need to tell them.

When they’re hungry they’ll figure it out, and in Canmore they can’t go wrong. Let food operators decide how to promote themselves and don’t forget to try the Local’s Specials On Now.

Do you know your mayor and council members? Before the meeting on March 10 call them and tell them to give our food people a break. Come to the hearing and listen to people who never made a nickel they didn’t earn.
