Shame on cyclist leader

To the leader of a group of young road cyclists who cut across traffic at the Bow Valley Trail/Railway Avenue west intersection late Tuesday afternoon: You should be ashamed for teaching these kids to ride through oncoming traffic that had the green light at the intersection.

Firstly, it opens them up to the obvious danger of shooting through active traffic. Secondly, it instills an incorrect mindset of cyclists being exempt from traffic rules.

I’m quite an avid cyclist myself, and happily am existing in the Bow Valley feeling relatively safe after years of dangerous road riding in a cyclist-hating community.

The coexistence of motorists and cyclists seems a given here. However, this is a relationship that needs care.

Your example of disregard for traffic rules is what drives motorists to disrespect cyclists on the road, and ignorant behaviour multiplies. Teach these kids better, and lead by good example, such that we can all continue to safely enjoy these beautifully situated roads together.
