Regarding the tragically regular items about wildlife fatalities on the highways in the Canmore/Banff/Lake Louise area ...

I am constantly stunned at the continuing death toll, yet ongoing lack of action. Every time, comments are made about speeding traffic.

During the five years my husband and I owned a condo in Canmore, we travelled Highway 1 regularly. We were always concerned at the blatant speeding we saw; even police cars (without emergency lights), buses and lorries.

We were almost always the only drivers obeying the speed limits and were constantly being overtaken.

If the residents of Alberta truly care about these tragic and avoidable wildlife deaths, the answer is truly simple and very affordable: install average speed cameras. Their installation is cheap, their impact is instant and they even pay for themselves in speed fines – plus, of course, the immediate benefits to wildlife.

Any complainants would be outing themselves as considering themselves above the law.

The rhetoric has gone on long enough – put action behind the words and install speed management. I would hope to hear an outcry asking why this obvious solution is not carried out immediately; it’s too late when the animals are gone ...
