Speaking on behalf of four-dozen re-united University of Manitoba Faculty of Architecture alumni, former professors and spouses, it is felt that there may be column space to report an act of appreciation and to share words of commendation for a particular group residing in the Rocky Mountain Outlook community.

Nearly four months post-reunion, Calgary architect Derek Haight recently re-acquainted with a families-owned mountain resort and bistro restaurant located near Lake Louise. His purpose was to present an award of hospitality excellence – a one-of-a-kind branding iron hand tooled by alumnus Lorne Matthews of High River and bearing a faculty logo created by colleague Don Kerr, late of the Turks and Caicos Islands. Accepting the award were hostess par excellence Shannon Cavanaugh and chef extraordinaire Nigel Walker.

The inscription reads as follows: “BEST IN CLASS – Presented to Baker Creek Mountain Resort, hosts of the U of Manitoba Faculty of Architecture Centennial, 29 April 2013, by the last graduates of the professional B. Arch. program, circa 1970.”

In separate correspondence I wrote: “As was our desire and your commitment, much of what we experienced was akin to going to spring camp, albeit in the fresh breezes of a Rocky Mountains valley versus the blowing tumbleweeds of our Prairie flatlands past. For those of us who are from afar in Ghana, Australia, Hong Kong and distant locations in Canada this was something not partaken of previously and something from which memories are made. Commendation, then, for being superb camp leaders!”

Rocky Mountain Outlook readers can stand proud.
