Attention all drivers of Canmore: There seems to be some confusion out there as to what to do when school bus lights are flashing red. The easy answer is, STOP!

This is one of the first things you learn when you get your licence, and it also falls under the category of ‘common sense’. So there is no reason that parents, like myself, should have to run into the street to try and get the attention of a driver, so they abide by this law set up to keep our children safe.

There are children getting off and on these buses, so, take a moment and think about how you would feel if one of those kids gets hit by your car because you are in such a big hurry to get to work, Tim Hortons or just because you are too distracted to remember what that red light means.

Think about how your impatience could ruin a family’s life in a split second. As far as I’m concerned, there is nothing in life so important that people can’t stop for the few minutes it takes for the kids to get off and on the bus.

On Railway Avenue, there are two lanes of traffic coming from both directions, and no matter what lane you are in, the red flashing lights apply to you. A child can be crossing the road while those lights are flashing and chances are, they will cross your lane too, so think about that as you cruise on by.

Don’t be shocked if you get a hefty fine, as all of us parents are now packing our smartphones that take beautiful, clear photos of your licence plate which the RCMP are only too happy to receive.

Please be aware of your surroundings and drive safely.
