Support soldiers through Legion

Editor: With the tragic news of the suicides of over 54 soldiers I felt compelled to consider how I might do something to support the men and women who work in a profession that protects each of us and our wonderful country, but leaves them with unimaginable trauma in their life.

As I considered this question, I realized that the Legion is one way I can support our soldiers and their families. I joined the Canmore Three Sisters Legion Branch #3 a year ago. Through my membership fee ($50 annually) I get to contribute to the “many services to veterans, serving military, RCMP members, and their families” that are supported by the Legion.

The Canmore Legion also provides a place for community, for gathering with friends, family and for special occasions. During the early days of the Canmore flood, the Legion became the gathering place for many in the community to coordinate help for neighbours and workers dealing with the aftermath (as a side note, the food at the Three Sisters Diner in the Legion is superb and one of the best deals in town. A great deck in the summer with amazing views of the mountains too).

The website (http://www.canmorelegion.ca/join_canmore_legion.html) clarifies that “you do not need to be a veteran to join.” For me, joining the Legion is one way to demonstrate the compassion I feel for our soldiers and their families. If this sounds like a plug for the Legion, it absolutely is. The more members, the greater is the service they can provide to our soldiers and others who serve our country.

As we approach Nov. 11, I would like to thank the Legions (Canmore, Banff and Exshaw) for being there for those who serve our country. And to those who serve our country, my deepest and most heartfelt appreciation. I am so sorry for the horrors you experience to keep us safe.

Darcey Lynn Marc,

Canmore
