Wednesday was a great day for me. It was the first time in two months that I have been able to do the hike to Grassi. I usually do it two or three times a week, but have been unable to do so since early November because of an injury.

On prior walks I have felt a degree of anger towards the people who carve their initials into the bench that is at the halfway point on the service road – a memorial to Bess Jane Louie.

I didn’t know her, but I wonder about the mental state of people who will deface a memorial. Then one day a few months ago I noted the bench had been dismantled and the wooden pieces removed. On Wednesday, Cameron was re-assembling the bench. He had sanded and re-varnished the pieces.

I asked him if he was doing this for parks or for the family. He said he had just taken it upon himself to do it.

So, thank you, Cameron. You added to my day, and I’m sure Bess Jane was smiling on you as well.

John Reilly,

Canmore
