I recently had a very unnerving confrontation with a gentleman who purports to be the advocate for homeless people in Canmore.
I am a 67-year-old retiree and former homeowner in Canmore who found himself in an awkward situation.
I arrived at a location on Sept. 23. I own a nice RV, proceeds of the sale of my home, but I am certainly not rich and I’m on a fixed income of $1,267 per month.
I felt I had a right to reside there while trying to get my finances in order. I was verbally accosted by this person who was rude, threatening and very foulmouthed toward me.
I called Town bylaw services and spoke to a very nice lady who assured me that I was not breaking any bylaws and, while somewhat different from the norm, I had as much right as any other individual to utilize the space the Town of Canmore has so kindly turned a blind eye to while they grapple with this serious social and legal issue.
My sincere thanks to the Town of Canmore for showing a large measure of compassion and a word of advice to the gentleman who made me feel so unsafe in my town, that I moved to maintain peace of mind.
Sometimes things are not as they appear.
