Remember that scene in Annie Hall where Woody Allen, stuck in line, begins arguing with some schmuck pontificating on McLuhan, only to be vindicated by McLuhan himself who miraculously appears?

That to me is the quintessence of good luck and timing. I had such a moment this morning.

Before leaving on my ride this morning, I pumped my tires, perhaps in retrospect a bit too high. I proceeded to ride 50 kilometres out to Morley and on the way back noticed a thumping rear tire. Inspecting it, I found my tire not seated properly and with a tube aneurysm. It was about to pop.

I had no choice but to let the air out and, having no pump, try to hitchhike 20 km into Exshaw where I could snag air.

I started to walk and within five minutes, “Ross” stopped. He started to rummage in his vehicle and I thought he was making room for my bike.

Instead he pulled out a mini compressor, plugged it into his car lighter and proceeded to pump me up.

He had me riding again in no time.

Ross was a farrier, (an expert on equine foot care), on his way to Brewster ranch to shoe some horses. A true cowboy and a gentleman.

Thanks Ross.

Romeo Bruni,

Canmore
