As a longtime resident of Canmore, I commend all those involved with the Public Art Committee and their latest contribution to public art: Touchstone by artist Peter Powning, now gracing the plaza in front of Elevation Place.

My husband Brian and I were very heartened to be there for the unveiling and to see how enthralled and engaged the public was in this truly exceptional piece that incorporates so much of the heart and soul of our townspeople.

I always enjoy going to Berlin, Germany and on every occasion I am so impressed with the public art I see there. After all the bombing and destruction of the Second World War, it is marvellous to see the renewal of that city with well-placed and very contemporary public art. I truly appreciate that a committee of hard-working volunteers has made Canmore’s renewal equally meaningful, and must congratulate all those involved in bringing public art to Canmore.

I am proud and delighted that I was able to contribute artifacts to the Touchstone sculpture and have a tribute to my Finnish heritage and my Arctic past documented and recorded in the beautiful book that accompanies the work. I am truly blessed to be part of this wonderful town.

Congratulations on a fine achievement to all those involved and to the Town of Canmore for supporting public art in our community.

Helmi Bracco,

Canmore
