Watching my speedometer

Editor: I just received my second photo radar ticket of the year in the mail. In a town notorious for fining people for doing 31 km/h in a 30 km/h zone, this is hardly a surprise.

In a town notorious for fining people for doing 31 km/h in a 30 km/h zone, this is hardly a surprise. It looks like my limited grocery money will now be going into Canmore’s bulky coffers, and all in the name of public safety, right?

I was fined for speeding at the Bow Bridge, a narrow stretch of road also used by cyclists and intersected by two heavily used crosswalks. The problem is that I was watching the road.

Now, as I drive through these crosswalks, my eyes are more focused on my speedometer than my surroundings, making sure that I maintain a consistent, if distracted, 29 km/h. I can’t afford another ticket, but apparently Canmore can’t afford not to risk the lives of pedestrians either.
