Welcome to 1984

Editor: This is in response to lawyer Rathbone’s claim that anyone opposed to paid parking is in the dark ages. Well, sir, I beg to differ as it seems like we are in the middle of Orwell’s 1984.

Well, sir, I beg to differ as it seems like we are in the middle of Orwell’s 1984. We have a town council with frighteningly Orwellian parallels.

Mayor Sorenson’s thought police/brainwash program – designed to make us not drive.

Bylaw (stormtroopers) attack on retail – outdoor merchandise debacle.

Complete lack of respect/regard for citizens – paid parking, Bear Street into a parking lot, scramble crosswalks, etc.

Increase of policing of citizens – more bylaws and officer, new peace officer vehicles.

All contractors are created equal, but Caribou Properties is more equal than others – erecting their own housing project in a residential neighbourhood, not the same parking guidelines that all other contractors had to follow, approval board stacked in their favour with board members having conflicts of interest.

This can be the only explanation for the travesty that took place on Thursday’s meeting of the development appeal board. The board somehow found no problems, conflicts or any disruption to any of the adjacent properties.

Putting a 150-person staff accommodation on three lots directly across from a bed and breakfast is not seen as a problem?

Is it being built in a neighbourhood where people are raising families not seen as a problem?

Caribou Properties is so big it needs its own housing project and should not be the problem of our Beaver Street community. Why should a thriving B & B be put out of business, people’s property values slashed, a long-standing community destroyed?

Why? Because Caribou Properties got too big and needs staff housing.

This makes no sense and possibly the DAB board was victim of Mayor Karen’s thought police and all common sense, logic and compassion went out the window.

Dark ages? Afraid not lawyer Rathbone, but Orwell’s 1984. Mr. Chris Neve, I ask you again, who is bullying whom?
