Why the high cost of gas?

Editor: We all accept that living in a destination town means a high cost of living, but I have to voice my displeasure with the fact that we are being completely gouged on gas prices. This is not a luxury item, it’s something we all need.

This is not a luxury item, it’s something we all need. For weeks now, the price of gas in Cochrane has been 90.9 and for that entire period, we have been paying 109.9.

Once a week I drive to Cochrane and have found that if I need a full tank, I can save far more than I spend on fuel to get there. That shouldn’t be.

Oil is extracted all over North America, refined mostly in the U.S., and then shipped up here. How can it cost 20 per cent more to get it from Calgary to Canmore?

More interestingly, how did every one of the various stations (Esso, PetroCan, FasGas) decide to charge exactly the same exorbitant rate?

We pay more for gas than almost anywhere in the country. Right now it’s 94 in Halifax, 91 in Regina, and 101 in Prince George. I generally prefer to support local businesses, but local businesses have to have some respect for their community.

Neil Jones,

Canmore
