UPDATE: Banff highway reopens after being washed out

Highway 93 North has fully reopened.

BANFF NATIONAL PARK – Highway 93 North is fully reopened after mudslides washed out sections of the Banff National Park highway for about six hours Tuesday (Aug. 22).

Saskatchewan River Crossing to Parker Ridge was closed off as Parks Canada crews removed debris from the pavement by rain and flooding.

"Parks Canada responded and found that creeks from Mt. Wilson had deposited silty debris on the highway in four locations between Saskatchewan River Crossing and Rampart Creek Campground impacting approximately 150 metres of roadway total. There were no injuries or property damage," said Amy Krause, acting, partnering and engagement officer for Banff, Yoho and Kootenay field unit, in an email.

The highway, which connects Banff and Jasper national parks, reopened at 12:15 p.m.

According to Environment Canada, approximately five to 10 millimetres of rain is expected Tuesday in Banff National Park.

Motorists are encouraged to check Drive BC and Alberta 511 for up-to-date road conditions prior to travel.

Saskatchewan River Crossing is approximately 80 kilometres north of Lake Louise.
