CANMORE – A man was killed after being struck by a train early Tuesday morning in Canmore, police said.

The Canmore RCMP said they received a complaint of a man being struck by a train at Railway Avenue and Bow Valley Trail at about 12:30 a.m. on Aug. 3. Once they arrived, police found the 54-year-old deceased man.

Police said they’re working with CP Rail and the Alberta Medical Examiners Office to investigate the incident.

A spokesperson for CP Rail didn't have the length of time the train was stopped.

According to Operation Lifesaver Canada – an education site dedicated to preventing collisions at railway crossings and railway trespassing – there have been 18 incidents involving railways in Alberta this year, including one fatality and four serious injuries. Throughout the country, the organization stated there have been 100 incidents, leading to 24 deaths and 14 serious injuries.

The police said they’re not releasing the identity of the man out of respect to the person’s friends and family.

Anyone with information can contact the police at 403-678-5519.
