The polarizing and contentious wildlife corridor that was necessary for the Smith Creek area structure plan came under the microscope at the Land and Property Rights Tribunal.

“It ended up being one of those days where almost everything goes right,” said McKeever about winning his first gold in Beijing on Monday (March 7). “We started to enjoy ourselves and that doesn’t happen very often.”

“I think it surprised everyone that we had that sort of uptake. We’ve heard from our partners like hospitals and members of the community that there was nowhere to take people, especially in the dead of night in winter when it’s cold. This is a real need for us. Those are the kind of pieces that we found running the program last year.”

After a week of testimony for representatives and experts for Three Sisters Mountain Village Properties Limited on the Smith Creek area structure plan, the Town of Canmore responded with its case at the Land and Property Rights Tribunal hearing.

“Now Albertans are starting to get on planes and leave, so we have recovered as much as we're going to from the domestic market. … International travel is absolutely key to getting this industry back up on its feet. The restrictions are the biggest impediment. Planning a trip to Canada from the U.K. isn’t something you do in two weeks. You’re likely dreaming it up years in advance and planning six months to a year in advance.”

What began as an appeal against a new bed and breakfast showed greater concerns with the Town of Canmore’s existing bylaws on the accommodation type.
